PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Future of Hawai'i's Housing is a bottom-up research project conducted for the Hawai'i Public Housing Authority that began with in-home interviews of 30 families across Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Hawaiʻi, Maui, and Kauaʻi. Insights from these interviews, along with qualitative data and case studies, were used to create guiding principles and design guidelines that form the foundation for future housing projects.
This project was conducted alongside density studies and prototypes for public engagement. The findings and outcomes from this set of closely related projects are documented in the Future of Hawai'i's Housing: Exploring Housing for All report.
BACKGROUND
This project was part of the Re-imagining HPHA series, an interdepartmental and multidisciplinary initiative conducted for the Hawai'i Public Housing Authority by a group of principal Investigators at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The initiative aims to rethink public housing programs and facilities to support the Hawai'i Public Housing Authority's mission and long-term goals. All reports are accessible via Hawai'i Housing Lab, a platform created to document, collect, and communicate knowledge derived from this project.
